Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals
Real Madrid face Bayern in UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
Real Madrid will face Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Real Madrid will play the 1st leg away from home on the 12th April, and the 2nd leg will be played at the Santiago Bernabéu on the 18th of April.
Emilio Butragueno was disappointed at drawing Bayern Munich and said he would have hoped to face them later in the UCL competition.
"Bayern are one of the worst opponents we could get, no doubt," Emilio Butragueno. "But it is disappointing also for them".
"We must go into the matches knowing how difficult it will be. They have top-class players in every position, with so much experience. It is a great club. We would have liked to meet Bayern later in the UCL competition, but the draw made, and we must respect it."
The 2nd leg at home at the Santiago Bernabeu was a slight advantage, Emilio Butragueno said.
"If we get a good result there, then yes," he said. "The 2nd match at home gives you a very slight advantage. But we must play a good match there. We know that 20 good minutes from Bayern Munich can be deadly for us. Today is not the best draw we could have got. It is a very nice tie to be able to play, and everybody will be watching these matches."
The tie brings current Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti back to the club where he won the UEFA Champions League in 2013-14, his 1st season in charge. But he was then sacked after he finished his 2nd season without winning a major trophy.
"Carlo Ancelotti is a great trainer, with experience," Butragueno said. "He has won everything as a player and as a coach. We will talk these days."
Carlo Ancelotti, meanwhile, said he is "excited" by Bayern Munich's tie against Real Madrid.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have met on 22 previous occasions in the European Cup. Bayern Munich have made it to the UCL quarter-finals having eliminated Arsenal in the UCL last 16.
Bayern Munich came 2nd in their group, behind Atletico Madrid and ahead of Rostov and PSV.
Their top goal scorer in Europe this season is Robert Lewandowski, with 7 goals. In the German Bundesliga, Bayern Munich are leaders with a 10-point advantage over RB Leipzig.
